EPL Merseyside Derby
I was commissioned by the English Premier League to create a match day graphic for one of the fiercest and oldest derbies in world football, the Merseyside Derby. Liverpool v Everton has been a must watch game for decades and it was a privilege to be able to try and put my spin on what makes this game so special.
The Concept
I did my research and decided to plan my design around the support and the noise of a match day. From over the radio waves from Radio City to the stadium itself, its the febrile atmosphere that makes these games such a compelling watch.
Refining the idea
As well as the noise, there’s no doubt that there is also conflict on the pitch. Two players standing back to back didn’t have the feel I wanted… I felt it better that they were contesting. Contesting the ball, contesting the points, the fans contesting the bragging rights, contesting who could sing louder! This felt more in line with a derby.
Colour
I started bringing in a simple colour split. Many families in the city will have split loyalties, blues living with reds and reds living with blues. The competition is fierce but rarely aggressive.
Final design
The design features key elements from the city such as Radio City and the filigree from the gates of Anfield to the songs that play before games and the iconic flags present in the stands.
